So, this wasn't a super big trip. I just needed some produce. There was free toothpaste, so I thought I'd pick that up too. Apparently, there is also free Axe shower tools available, but my Publix didn't carry that.

Don't Throw Away Today's Junk Mail

Don't throw away today's junk mail. There was a $5 off $50 Publix coupon in my Red Plum mailer in Central Florida.

Nice Old Navy Deal w/ Groupon

Spent: $31.92
Saved: $49.97
Total Value: $81.89
Percent Saved: 61%

So, Old Navy had a Groupon after Thanksgiving. Purchase $20 of merchandise for $10. I went to Old Navy this weekend hoping to find a jacket, and I did. This Classic Wool Zip jacket was $79.94, but there was a 50% off sale on most jackets. The Groupon knocked another $20 off of it, making my out of pocket purchase at the store $21.92. Since I did pay for the Groupon, my total expenditure on this jacket was $31.92. Great deal!

Winn-Dixie: Free Salad

Spent: $9.35
Saved: $7.15
Total Value: $16.15
Percent Saved: 43%

This was a small, but good purchase. Winn-Dixie has usually had the 40 count Truvia Sweetener on sale for $2.99, which would have gotten me a really good deal with my coupon, but this time, the unadvertised deal was on the 80 count box. However, this is a good deal for a natural product.

Dole Spinach, $1.50 Sale

Office Depot: $20 off Ink!

Spent: $37.37
Saved: $21.61
Total Value: $58.98
Percent Saved: 37%

Rewards Earned: $3.73

As we all know, ink is very expensive. You can literally walk out of the store with a brand new printer for less than it would cost to replace all of the cartridges in your current printer. Well, the office stores are the best place to buy ink. Sometimes, the ink is even $1 or $2 cheaper there than they would be at the supercenters. Unlike the supercenters, the office stores will match their online store prices. I got 10% back in Office Depot Star Teacher Rewards with the purchase of ink, which I believe is the same offer as their regular rewards program. However, the 10% is the after-coupon price.  Furthermore, I get $2.00 in rewards for every cartridge I recycle, so I will be bringing those in soon.

Budgeting with iTunes

With the iTunes music store, the App Store for iOS devices, and now the Mac App Store, spending money with your Apple ID can quickly get out of control. This is especially true with music and mobile apps that are very inexpensive. The easiest way to prevent all of those small purchases from burning your wallet is to simply decide how much you are going to spend each month on iTunes and then purchase iTunes gift cards. You buy the gift card, enter the code into iTunes, and then the program keeps your balance at top of the application so that you know how much money you have left.

Doing this helps you in many ways. It keeps your budget in line because you have a set amount of money to spend. It also keeps you from having to annotate all of those small purchases if you still use a check book or a software program entering transactions manually. Furthermore, your spending is not a surprise when you actually sit down to analyze it. One other thing I noticed is that I have become picky about what I choose to purchase as I watch my gift card balance wind down. When you set a spending goal, sometimes you end up competing with yourself to end the month under budget.

You can also score good deals on iTunes gift cards from time to time. Publix has offered iTunes gift card deals similar to their gas card promotions in the past. CVS will sometimes have ECB deals on iTunes gift cards. According to I Heart Saving Money, Best Buy is currently running a deal for $80 for a $100 iTunes card.

Does that sound much better than giving Apple your credit or debit card number and then spending freely? I think so.

This was a decent week at Publix. I was able to stock up on some olive oil and canned tomatoes. I tend to use those a lot. I also had to get some full-priced items. That was a great time to use store brands. Those products usually are only worth it when the name brand products are not on sale.

CVS: Free Candy, $10 Back on $50 Gift Card!

Okay. So there's no point in doing a Spent/Saved for this. I went mainly for the iTunes card. There was a $10 ECB back on that. I also got $1 back in ECB for my reusable bag during this trip. The candy was listed as $3.50, but it rang up at $3.00. I had a $3.00 ECB to spend, which made this candy free except for the $0.20 in sales tax. Awesome trip.

Political Party Differences on Spending

When it comes to spending, it seems like there is the only one small difference between the two parties:

  • Democrats don't want to cut anything except for perhaps the military and special tax breaks.
  • Republicans want to cut everything except for the program(s) from which they as individuals receive benefits.
Nevermind. There doesn't seem to be that much of a difference after all.

Publix Promise Again! $0.48 for this!

Spent: $0.48

So, I went to Publix last night because I forgot some stuff. The Johnsonville Italian sausage was priced at $3.99 on the shelf. I had a  $1.00 coupon to go with it. However, it rang up at $4.29 on the register. I caught it and had the price verified. Publix's policy is to give you the item for free if the price rings up differently than the price listed on the shelf. On top of that, they still scanned the coupon! That $1.00 of overage helped to cover the green beans!
